Sentinel were fortunate to be given a platform at the Jersey International Business School Cyber Crime forum held on the Isle of Man on the 6th December. I explained on behalf of our company the approach we are taking to developing a ‘Cyber Aware’ workforce. I think there was general consensus at the conference that the term ‘cyber’ confuses the issue. We prefer, and have used since we started, the term ‘Business Data and Information Security’.
Firstly, Sentinel Directors are time served Data and Information Security specialists. We have worked in a variety of industries and understand what needs to be done to ensure assets are as safe as you can make them. We offer businesses practical, relevant and realistic solutions to the problems presented by issues such as EU-GDPR and Cyber Crime. However, we recognise that whilst those issues are high on the agenda a holistic approach to protecting business information will be the foundation to success.
We also know from experience that humans are most often the weakest link in the chain and will find work arounds to perceived barriers. I gave the example during my presentation about an organisation that I worked for some time ago that had a strict password change policy. The password was automatically generated, consisted of random numerous characters and was impossible to remember. Unsurprisingly, users wrote their passwords down and some resorted to sticking them on a post it note, often under the keyboard! Make it complicated and it won’t work.
EU-GDPR will be upon us on the 25th May 2018 and that sort of approach will not be acceptable. We simply cannot make it easy for data to be so easily accessed. Prevention is of course better than cure. With figures from studies suggesting anything between 35-50% of your workforce will click on a link contained in a phishing email then it screams to us that education and awareness raising are key to any success. That has led to a variety of training courses being delivered by us and in conjunction with partners here on the Isle of Man.
Our start point when helping business is to conduct a Business Risk Assessment. Think of this like booking an appointment to see the Doctor for a health check. Our Data Doctors will take you through a series of questions that we collect securely on a device. We will give you a diagnosis of your risk across seven key business areas there and then. Shortly after that we provide a written report with a prescription to put things right and get you on the road to recovery.
We have and impressive and growing network of specialists so if one our data doctors can’t fix things we’ll offer you to the option to see one or our consultant for some non-invasive, confidential surgery. The objective being to help you remove or mitigate the risks. Once all the remedial work is complete, we will provide you with a certificate indicating you have a clean bill of health. We recommend, you return in at least 12 months for another check-up.
