We know that there are people out there in business that struggle with some of the terminology and jargon related to cyber (computers) GDPR (new data protection laws) and keeping their business safe online (think digital crime prevention). So, we’re going to post up regularly with a bit of jargon busting to help.
Today’s subject, Cyber stuff
Cyber relates to the characteristics of computers. That smartphone in your pocket, that’s a computer by the way.
Phishing – A hacker (criminal for the most part) sends you an email to trick you into doing something you wouldn’t normally do. This is the digital equivalent of being scammed, it’s an attempt to deceive and normally done with clever graphics and with the intent of putting you under pressure.
Smishing – same concept as above but the trick is delivered by a text message. Common ones are those purporting to be from your bank, mobile phone provider etc.
Vhishing – the trick is delivered by telephone this time. Often the caller will be asking the recipient to do something, part with login credentials, transfer cash or disclose information.
What do you need to do as a business owner?
Don’t be rushed
Take a few minutes to think about what you are being asked to do
